about

This record was the culmination of more than two decades of labor, teen angst, middle age crises, and a never-ending itch to release these songs the world. With crowdsourced funding, it is now a reality. We appreciate all who contributed to make this happen; without you, these songs would still be on tape, collecting dust in a sock drawer. Thank you and enjoy!

Levelhead – A Brief History of Time

1991-1993: Levelhead was formed in the unincorporated suburbs northwest of Atlanta, with Gino Zahnd on drums, Matt Monroe on bass, and Jay Neubert on guitar and vocals. The sound varied from Primus and Red Hot Chili Pepper-influenced punk/funk, to bizarre fantasy-laden tunes that defy the mind such as “The Beast and the Elf.” They were quite obviously still finding their sea legs. Practices and deep discussions about the vastness of space and the likelihood of alien abductions were held in Matt’s basement.

1993-1994: Brad Neubert joined LH on drums after Gino went off to college at UGA, where he later founded “The Pullouts.” Practices commenced at Jay/Brad’s house as the trio dialed in on the LH sound. In 1994, LH recorded and released the “Spooky?” 7” record. Later, LH released a split 7” record with friends Quadiliacha. Playing locally at dives and house shows such as Somber Reptile, the Wreck Room, Driver Dome, I-Defy House, Andy Stivers’ house and BLTs commenced in earnest.

1995: LH recorded this very opus at Sleepless Nights studios in Decatur, Ga., with big plans for a summer release and a national tour in support. T-shirts were screen-printed. Tips from pizza joint jobs were hoarded for gas, peanut butter and cigarette money. Coined the “Acorn Tour”, Jay burned through cartons of Marlboro Mediums and many thankless months cobbling together the itinerary primarily through zines, word-of-mouth and rotary telephone. Everything was a go, with one exception: this album. A nascent punk label broke a promise to release the CD prospectively titled “Humans Would All Look the Same at First to an Alien” for reasons unknown. A vaguely explained delay was communicated. Then, the excuses, and all communication, stopped. It was the ‘90s equivalent of getting dumped via text message. But the show, as it must, went on the road. Joined by bestie and road dog Brian Kilzer, LH traversed the country on a month-long tour in a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta ’88 with Quadiliacha in a mini van playing various clubs, rest areas, a laundry-mat (seriously), a trailer park, restaurants, and coffee shops. Jay, the eldest, turned 21 as the caravan traversed the Mojave Desert. That night, the eight-man crew splurged on a double occupancy room at a Motel 6 and toasted life with a case of Beast. All made it back alive and dead broke.

1996-1997: The band enlisted friend, guitarist and Pullouts frontman Damien Schaefer to fatten up the LH live experience with vocal harmonies and a second axe. LH upgraded to a mini van and embarked on a Florida tour. They played a few one-off shows in Atlanta and a few college towns in the Southeast and Midwest. But with neither opportunity nor means to release this LP to the masses, the band began to run out of gas. On the way home following a show with June of 44 at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio – where the show ended early because some idiot pulled a fire alarm – the crew contemplated its past and its future while driving amid a long-haul convoy of 18-wheelers through the Great Smoky Mountains.
Shortly thereafter, LH broke up, and the songs went dormant.

2013: Resurgence! Reunion show at The Earl.

2016: The Levelhead LP was released on vinyl. 
